Decisions, Decisions, Decisions!

Decisions, decisions, decisions! It is so difficult to know what to take and what to leave; what to sell and what to give away; what to keep and what to throw away. Solomon said there is a time for everything under the sun. This seems to be our time for decisions.

Our move from a large, modern home into a small, older rental has forced us to downsize significantly. We have already sold, given away, thrown away or donated a large part of our worldly goods. The decision making gets harder as the remainder gets smaller. What to do with the little ceramic dish from Great Aunt Inez? What about the single set of Grandmother’s china? Should we sell the beautiful, expensive, imported china from Stepdad that we will likely never use? How is it that we get so attached to things? Why is letting go so difficult when we can’t take any of it with us to heaven anyway?

The Bible repeatedly calls on God’s people to decide. Joshua presented the challenge to Israel as they prepared to cross the Jordan (Joshua 24:16). Elijah posed it again after God’s vindication on Mount Carmel (1 Kings 18:21). Christ repeatedly presented to His disciples the decisions they would face if they chose to follow Him. We are also instructed to follow that which is good (3 John 1:11). When we put our focus on these choices, the decisions about things become less and less important. Today, may we each focus on the more important decisions so that the things of this world do not distract us from what is of eternal importance.
