Thirty-three Toilets

With all churches, schools, bars and other public places shut down since the COVID-19 crisis started in March, Edie and I were elated to hear the Mozambique President’s announcement that churches could reopen their doors if they meet strict health standards. A long list of requirements was published, and to our disappointment not one of the 11 Adventist churches in our area meets the new health standards. And the needed upgrades are too expensive for them to put in place. Thankfully, through AFM donations, we can offer them financial help to reopen.

According to the new regulations, if a church doesn’t have a flushing toilet, it must have a minimum of three outhouses—two for liquids and one for solids. Running water must be available for washing hands. A five-gallon bucket with a spigot will suffice. None of the churches here have proper restrooms. So, if our math is correct, there is a need to construct 33 toilets!
Within a week, the district pastor had contacted the church elders, and itemized material lists were submitted to us. A time was arranged for each church to bring a pick-up truck, and we gave them the bricks, cement, metal sheets and lumber needed to construct outhouses. We also gave them round squat toilets with lids. You can imagine their happiness!

We are happy that we have had the opportunity to help our brothers and sisters in Christ in their time of need. Pray that each church will get the government’s stamp of approval to reopen. So far, two have received authorization.

The church and its members are a light to the community. It is a blessing for the gospel light to be switched back on again!
