About the People

Located on the coast of the Black Sea, the democratic semi-presidential republic of Georgia is bounded to the north and northeast by Russia, to the south by Turkey and Armenia, and to the southeast by Azerbaijan. The country is made up of various interconnected mountain ranges and plateaus and possesses the deepest known cave in the world. Forests cover around 40 percent of Georgia’s territory, and its climate is extremely diverse. Agriculture and tourism are the principal economic sectors. Georgia has been famous for its physical education and is well known for its rich folklore, unique traditional music, theatre, cinema and art. Different opinions exist regarding the degree of political freedom in Georgia. It maintains good relations with its direct neighbors and is a member of the United Nations, the Council of Europe, the World Trade Organization and other entities. With a high unemployment rate and a relatively low median income compared to the rest of Europe, this is an opportune time to meet the real needs of Georgians.

With over 4 million people and only 250 Adventist Christians, Georgians are an unreached people group. According to The Georgian Chronicles, their ancestor was the great-grandson of the biblical Japheth. According to Orthodox tradition, Christianity was first preached in Georgia by the apostles Simon and Andrew in the first century. Today 83.9 percent of the population practices Eastern Orthodox Christianity and has fought to protect their Christian identity in the face of immense pressure from neighboring Muslim empires. These hospitable and sociable people give great importance to food and drink—best observed during a supra (a feast held by people in the Caucasus), when a vast assortment of dishes is prepared, always accompanied by large amounts of wine.

About the Project

The Things We Leave Behind

While we are taking a break from fieldwork to recover and mend our nets, our call remains, and we are committed to putting our gifts to good use and continuing to advance the gospel.

He Still Provides

He has a plan here, and we are a part of it. He knew what we needed so long before we did. He was working on this even while we were losing hope.

The Perfect Storm

Tears started streaming down my face. “I do understand, Lord. These things that I worry about to the point of exhaustion are nothing but mundane to you. You can fix them in a heartbeat. “

The Heavenly Supra

I sometimes wonder what the Heavenly Supra will be like and how many of our Georgian friends we will reacquaint ourselves with there. It is the invitation we dearly wish to pass on. Please pray that many of them will say yes!

Katia

I still sometimes sit on the balcony staring at the city below. I still feel overwhelmed and small. But now I also feel hopeful.

The Things We Took for Granted

Here in the field, taking God with you in your daily life is a continuous choice, one that doesn’t seem as natural and comfortable as before.

People of Peace

I sighed again, this time with relief. Finding a person of peace sometimes feels like a long shot. But then sometimes they find you.

A Child Shall Lead Them

God knew that my worst fears about moving to a foreign country were related to my children. Maybe this was His way of letting me know that my children will be loved and happy here in Georgia.

Lockdown and Onions

They might be hiding behind an intimidating look, a sober face, a niqab or even cigarette smoke. But they all live, work, love, suffer and hope like we do.
