Portuguese Teacher, Guinea-Bissau

Portuguese Teacher

The Call

WADd03-1 Portuguese Teacher – Put your language skills to use as you develop lessons and teach Portuguese to young people levels 1 to 4. Show Christ’s love through your life as you connect and create friendships with the local youth, providing them a positive role model. Outside of school, assist in the Pathfinder club and other available outreach opportunities.

The People

Guineans generally appreciate foreigners, but they can try to take advantage because they think all “whites” are rich. They like people who have something to teach, and they learn relatively easily. They love to hear life stories and examples of victorious people. Religiously, the country is divided between Animists (40%), Muslims (50%), and Christians who are few (10%). Even between Christians and Muslims it is possible to find people who practice animism. The animist traditions are highly respected, since they are afraid of the devil’s spirits.

The Project

Guinea-Bissau is the world’s fifth-poorest nation and has the fifth-lowest Human Development Index. Two-thirds of the population lives in extreme poverty. During the civil war of 1998-99, much of the country’s infrastructure was destroyed, and it has been slow to recover under a cloud of persistent anarchy. Guinea-Bissau’s population is dominated by more than 20 African ethnicities, including the Balante, one of the largest ethnic groups in the country, the Fulani and their subgroups, the Diola, Nalu, Bijagó, Landuma, Papel and the Malinke. AFM’s project among the Geba people started in 2020 and is in the early stages of evangelism. To learn more, view the project page for Geba Animists of Guinea-Bissau
