Thankfully, God knew how much we needed a break—to spend time outside in His beautiful creation, to stare at nature, to hike and not have much to do but to soak in the moment. It has been healing and refreshing.
Nevertheless, we have been intentional in remembering that, although we are taking a break and resting and having family time, this does not mean that we are taking a break from being Christians. Our light should not stop shining while on vacation. Our awareness of those around us and the need to pray or say something to them is not on holiday.
A perfect example is how we met the caretaker of a small camping park where we stayed. She was very nice and helped us immensely. She also took time to talk to Adela, our younger daughter, and answered all her curious questions. As we were going to leave the camping park, Adela said she wanted to give something to the lady.
I acknowledged Adela’s desire but did not really stop to help her figure out what, as I was packing our things. A while later, Adela came back with a little Bible she had brought on the trip and said she wanted to give it to her. Adela wrote the lady a note thanking her for all her help and saying that this was a gift so that she would remember Adela. When my daughter gave it to her, the lady told her she did not really believe in anything, but that she would read it to remember her.
What a small and bold act by Adela, and yet not threatening. Adela made sure we exchanged contact information with the caretaker.
Adela’s act was such a blessing to our family, reminding us to take time for others. All it took was awareness on my daughter’s part to be in tune with the Holy Spirit and follow His leading.
Our family wants to always be a shining light, whether in Thailand, on vacation, or during furlough in the USA. Thank you for your prayers and support.
