“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” — Matthew 4:19
Hello! As you may have followed through previous stories, we have been working in the village of Chicualacuala, in the northern part of Gaza Province, Mozambique. There we have our Bible worker, Victor, a dedicated young man who left his home to serve God in this challenging region. He spent a few months in training with us, and noticing his passion for sports, we encouraged him to use that gift as a missionary tool to connect with people and build friendships.
One of the most beautiful stories that grew out of this work is that of a young man named Mildo, whom Victor met at the community sports court. Their friendship began one Monday afternoon during a conflict between a group that wanted to play soccer and another that wanted to play basketball. Mildo was among those playing soccer. That day, Victor chose to remain calm amid the tension, and the young men noticed his attitude. That serenity won their trust and opened the door to friendships that continue to this day.
Later, Mildo noticed that Victor often visited the home of another young man, Felisberto, for Bible study. Curious, he began stopping by after school, listening from a distance, until one day he accepted Victor’s invitation to study together at his own house. At the very first meeting, Mildo also invited a friend named Vino. Both were impressed by the way Victor taught using only the Bible and reading directly from the text. “Brother Victor,” Mildo said, “how can you teach so well with only the Bible in your hands?”
Since then, Victor has been studying with them every week. Mildo has visited Victor’s home many times, where they shared meals, and he received counsel and encouragement in the midst of difficulties at school and in his family. Little by little, the Word of God began to transform his life and his dreams.
Not long ago, Mildo asked: “Why haven’t you invited me to your church yet? Can I go with you one day?” Victor had not invited him before because he knew that Mildo spent his Saturdays playing soccer, and the matches there are taken so seriously that many even resort to witchcraft to secure victory. But, to everyone’s surprise and joy, Mildo chose to leave soccer behind that Sabbath and joined Victor for worship at the house of Mr. Félix, who opens his home for us to worship in each Sabbath (see “From Ashes of Pain to Renewed Hope,” July 2025). There, he experienced for the first time the joy of true worship.
Today, Mildo continues to grow in the knowledge of God’s Word. He is taking part in Friday evening worship at Victor’s home and is faithfully joining him in Discovery Bible Studies, becoming a dedicated disciple.
Our prayer is that Mildo will soon take the most important step of his life: accepting Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior. His story is living proof of how God is working in Chicualacuala—transforming young hearts in this village.
