Open Our Eyes

That’s a huge container in little hands!” I muttered as the sound of their tiny steps beyond the open door got louder. “What is inside it?” Their footsteps, puttering closer toward the front, peeked my imagination. Their smiles soon captivated my heart, and my uncertainty ebbed away like mist.
Three little girls! Three 12-day-old kittens!

They grinned right before my face as others edged to the front, eager to satisfy their curiosity. The older girl spoke cheerfully. As she lowered the container to the floor, I joined it on the ground. The littlest girl, beaming, picked up one kitty. She handed her to me. “They were born 12 days ago. We named the brown one Beryl after you.” As I held Beryl, the kitty, joy inundated me.

“She’s blind,” said the older girl.

“In two days, they shall see. Their eyes will open,” the other girls added.

Memories of my childhood cat giving birth on my bed flooded me. Beryl’s gentle claws grabbed my neck. I peeked into her toothless, adorable pink mouth as she meowed. Joe quickly grabbed his phone to capture the moment.

As I saw Beryl grope in her dark little world, with nothing but her cries for help, I saw my state: helpless, born of sin and darkness until the Savior came to feed me, spread a place of rest for me and open my eyes! Joe and I saw our state — pilgrims on a journey to a place God will open our eyes to see.

Like the little girls who brought Beryl the kitty to me, a young Greenlander opened my eyes early this year through her expression of love for us. Alighting out of a bus, I received an unexpected big hug around my waist. In awe of her gentle act, I kissed her head. She quickly looked beside me and grabbed Joe’s hand, bringing him right beside me and hugging us both. Though the passengers continued their onward journeys, this moment will never leave us.

We look forward to arriving in Greenland and to God opening our eyes to see how to share the Bread of Life and point Greenlanders to the Source of love, the One who opens our eyes.

God cares about little things. He allowed me to meet Beryl, the kitty, to remind me of His love and care. He sent a little Greenlander to hug us and show we were welcome. Isn’t it neat that He calls us by name?
