Georgian Bibles

Proposal to print 5,000 Georgian Bibles
Objectives
  • Turn this accomplishment into motivation for the local body of Disciple-Making Movement members
  • Make this project self-supporting for future reprinting
  • Make Discovery Bible Study one of the preferred formats of Bible study for new converts
  • Make possible the multiplication of newly planted groups
  • Draw more closely together the established church leadership and the body of new Disciple-Making Movement members.
First Steps
  • Make Georgian Bibles available in a decent polygraph format
  • Build trustful relationships with the Georgian Bible Society
  • Make the availability of the Bibles instrumental for the expansion of the discipleship groups and motivate the Disciple-Making Movement.
What will be the measurable results of this special project?

Copies of Georgian Bibles will be available for those who are interested. The number of those involved in Discovery Bible Studies will significantly increase. Relationships with the Georgian Bible Society will be established, yielding further cooperation.

Project Details

Over 85% of the population of Georgia, a former Soviet country, claims Eastern Orthodoxy as their religion and a marker of their national identity. During the period of the USSR, religious literature, especially the Bible, was banned. Georgians maintained expressions of their Christian culture through Orthodox rites, arts and ceremonies, yet Biblical knowledge remained overlooked.

The Georgian Bible was not widely available until the late 90s. When the Georgian Bible Society was established in Tbilisi, several Bible editions were published. They sold out quickly due to decades of spiritual hunger. Currently, there is a scarcity of Georgian Bibles again. The only ones available are table-sized family Bibles and those with non-canonical books.

With the recent implementation of Disciple Making Movements (DMM) in Georgia, the new discipleship networks found it challenging to find Bibles for those interested in truth. Among underground disciples, priests who have never read the Bible are asking for underground Bible studies. Some M-background believers are also seriously interested. Nevertheless, the shortage of available Bibles slows the spread of the gospel.

The leaders of the local DMM have already visited the Georgian Bible Society (GBS) multiple times, hoping to learn more details about printing options and negotiate the printing price. Their visits were successful, and GBS provided tentative expenses for the proposed options, which you will find in the attached file. The prices vary based on the publishing house, the quality of the paper, whether maps are included and transportation expenses. According to the project, there will be 4,700 Georgian Bibles printed, as well as 300 copies of a special leather edition.
