“Mom, is that noise coming from the road or our car?”
It had been a long week, and a surprise road trip to Detroit on a Friday evening was the last thing on my mind. I had forgotten that my son was supposed to stay with his dad for the weekend, which meant little time to pack up and go. Feeling frazzled and rushed, we grabbed our stuff and hit the road. We had reached the halfway point of our three-hour drive when, suddenly, we started to feel something strange as we drove.
I quickly realized something was not right and pulled over. Sure enough, the tire was flat.
Ugh! This day cannot get any worse, I thought to myself.
There I stood on the side of a busy highway, my dog and 15-year-old son by my side, in anxious anticipation. With little money and a car jack that would not work, I turned to my son and said, “We need to pray.”
With cars zooming by, we gathered and prayed to God. “Lord, we do not know what to do. Please send help our way.”
No more than a minute later, a car pulled over beside us. “Do you need help? We saw your son waving us down. We are Christian missionaries, we can help!”
They had been traveling from the Upper Peninsula and happened (providentially) to get a late start on their day when they saw us stranded. The kind couple insisted on taking us to lunch, where we shared our stories of how the Lord brought us to this moment. After we shared lunch, they drove us back to the shop where our tire was being replaced and sent us away with money, a fresh bag of cherries, and two brand-new tires, all at their expense.
What started as a terrible day ended up being one of the most memorable days of our family’s life. My son and I will never forget the way the Lord touched our hearts through the giving of two missionaries.
In similar ways, AFM missionaries around the world are touching the lives of unreached people. Please consider partnering with us through your prayers and financial gifts as we spread the good news of Jesus.
