A frail, bespectacled old man wrapped in a loincloth goes about the countryside proclaiming, “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth” (Matt. 5:3-5).
The words are those of Jesus Christ, God in the flesh; the voice is that of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the one they called, Mahatma, “The Great Soul.” In the early decades of the twentieth century, Gandhi spoke the words of the Savior to the people of India in order to liberate them from the oppression of colonial rule. The Indian people responded.
Fast forward almost a century. The India of today is almost unrecognizable compared to the Hindustan of the colonial period. Gleaming cars speed along freshly carved highways, transporting the multitudes of people of the South Asian continent faster than an ox-cart driver could ever have imagined. Faster still is the distribution of information over the recently installed fiber-optic network spread across this vast subcontinent.
Yet, for the overwhelming majority of the people of this great land—from the urban sprawl of Kolkata and Mumbai to the villages of Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, from the snowcapped peaks of the Himalayan mountains to the rice paddies of the Gangetic plains—their oppression persists.
Despite the startling advances of the last few decades, over a billion people in India long for something more—the same thing Jesus came to live and share 2,000 years ago. It is in part what Mahatma Gandhi shared almost a hundred years ago. It is the message of hope found in the words of the everlasting gospel, boldly declaring freedom—not from an oppressive colonial power but from the insidious presence of a spiritual enemy that robs life. Far too many of the people of India have no idea that the kingdom of heaven can be theirs, and that they can inherit the earth. When they hear, the Indian people will respond.
