The disciples had spent all day listening intently to the powerful teachings of their beloved Master. They had learned about the Sower, the seed, different soils, and other kingdom parables. Having direct access to Jesus, they were able to ask their perplexing questions and gain deeper insights. As daylight dwindled, it was time for them to move on and cross to the other side of the sea. You know the story; they faced a storm that shook their boat and their faith. Jesus rebuked not only the wind and the waves but also the disciples themselves for their fearfulness and faithlessness.
When I reflect on this incident, I am struck by how the storm reveals the state of the disciple’s faith. Even though they had just seen how easily the seed of God’s Word can be choked out or snatched away from one’s heart, their response to the storm showed that they were not yet “good ground” hearers (Mark 4:8, 40).
If you have ever attempted to get involved in reaching the unreached, you have likely experienced a storm or two; events that have shaken your faith or caused you to doubt. Sometimes the storm is external. However, if we are honest with ourselves, it is often the internal storms that cause us the most perplexity.
Maybe you would like to do more for God’s kingdom and have even considered the possibility of short or long-term mission work, but you have been battling an internal storm. It could be that you are scared of taking the step of faith necessary to begin the application process. Perhaps you struggle with self-doubt or guilt, feeling that you are too sinful or broken for God to use. Perhaps there is a secret sin that you have been battling for years, and you feel powerless to overcome it. If you can relate to any of these scenarios, or if you are facing a different storm, there is good news. The same God who rebuked the raging winds and waves can calm the storm in your heart if you will let Him.
“He who spoke peace to the billows of Galilee has spoken the word of peace for every soul. However fierce the tempest, those who turn to Jesus with the cry ‘Lord, save us,’ will find deliverance” (“The Desire of Ages,” page 336).
