The Gift

As children, we appreciate the gifts we receive. There is joy in the anticipation of a new toy or game and in seeing the shiny new objects and knowing they belong to you. Even a toy that provides only short-lived amusement can fill you with gratitude for the love the gift-giver has displayed.

As you get older, the joys change. You discover the blessing of giving gifts to others. Finding the perfect gift for someone, anticipating their joy in receiving it and witnessing their happiness provides a warm glow in your heart.

Yet earthly gifts cannot compare to the wonderful gift God has given to us in His Son, Jesus Christ. Remember when you first caught a glimpse of what the plan of salvation meant for you personally? The gift of freedom from guilt and shame; the joy of a heart renewed, knowing that you are made whole. The lovingkindness of God is simply amazing. Knowing everything you have done, He still draws you to Himself through His incredible mercy and grace. As you grow in maturity and appreciate all that He has done for you, His Ultimate Gift becomes more and more precious.

It is only natural to want to give back to God as an expression of gratitude for all that Jesus has done for you. Yet how do you find the perfect gift for God? What can you give to Christ that would bring joy to His heart? What would cause God to rejoice as you present your offering?

The most precious thing we can offer God is our lives in service to Him and others. This holiday season, as you consider the gifts you will receive and give, take time to reflect on the Gift you have been given in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Also, please remember that there are millions of people who know nothing of this incredible present available to them. Ask God if He would have you offer this gift to Him—the gift of going to share the love of Jesus among those who have never had an opportunity to know Him. In sharing this gift, you will experience the joy of responding to the call of the Savior and the joy of witnessing His other children respond to Him in love.
