There are moments in life that transcend sport, moments that refuse to be contained in time or trophies, moments when sport becomes more than a competition. These moments become a memory, a meaning and a mirror to the human spirit.
With the final whistle blown and history made, the FIFA World Cup 2026 football (soccer) tournament gave us controversies and celebrations, red cards and displays of individual brilliance, unforgettable firsts and bittersweet lasts, and along the way, breathtaking goals, tears, laughter, disputed refereeing decisions that have sparked endless debate and the thunderous cheers that echo on. With that, the U.S., Canada and Mexico have bid farewell to hosting the FIFA World Cup.
The hype, the fame, the excitement WAS REAL. History will remember the 2026 FIFA World Cup for its stunning upsets in which giants fell, underdogs rose, big-game players disappeared, and new ones blossomed. Paraguay’s knockout of Germany came as a shock. Norway, famous for its rich Viking history and the northern lights, lit up the football field in their first-ever World Cup campaign, doing the impossible and sending home five-time world champions, Brazil. Yet one of the tournament’s most inspiring stories comes from a nation many of us may never have heard of until they took to the field and dazzled with brilliance—Cabo Verde (Cape Verde).
Known for its dramatic volcanic landscapes, endless white-sand beaches and rich Creole culture, this stunning West African archipelago, with a population of around 530,000—smaller than many cities represented by clubs across top European leagues—had all eyes on it.
Through hard work, sacrifice, determination and unwavering belief, the Cabo Verde team earned its place on football’s biggest stage. They faced nations with deeper talent pools, decades of international experience and immense financial resources. Tying game after game, team after team, Cabo Verde’s remarkable tournament play eventually ended against Argentina—that powerhouse of talent and skills and the reigning World Cup Champions—in a thrilling game that went deep into extra time and pushed Argentina to the very edge, nearly sending them home by the smallest nation to grace the tournament. When they walked off the field, the Cabo Verde team left with something far greater than a place in the rankings; they left with the admiration, respect and recognition of millions around the world.
When the Cabo Verde players returned home, fans welcomed them as champions, leaving a mark that will endure far beyond the last whistle.
Sometimes the greatest stories are of victories not measured by lifting a trophy but by shifting what people believe is possible. This is the legacy of the Cabo Verde team.
As I watched their games and read about their tireless journey to the world’s biggest stage, I could not help but think of Heaven.
Throughout scripture, God has consistently chosen what the world considers small and insignificant to accomplish something great and lasting. He called a young shepherd boy to slay a giant. He chose fishermen to catch people and bring them life. Jesus Himself compared His kingdom to a mustard seed, where the smallest seed can grow into something greater than anyone imagined. This is the impossible made possible.
The world may overlook small nations, places and people, but God never does.

One day, people from every nation, tribe, people and language will stand before the throne of God, united in worship of the Lamb. Then the stories celebrated will not be of games won despite the odds, but of lives saved in the kingdom. These are the stories that will echo throughout eternity.
