Church Planter, Greek Orthodox of Greece

The Call

Church Planter – Workers needed: Two units are needed to start a church-planting movement among the people of the Greek Orthodox of Greece Project. The approach used in cultivating friendships and making disciples will depend on the gifts and talents of the individuals God is calling.

The People

Greeks are 97% Greek Orthodox. During Ottoman rule, the Greek Orthodox Church preserved the Greek language and cultural identity, and although religious freedom is officially guaranteed, Greeks cling tenaciously to their traditions and history. At the same time, they are sophisticated Europeans who, in general, are quite secular. Suspicious about American religions, they do not respond to direct evangelism but rather to approaches based on close personal relationships.

Greece, roughly the size of Alabama, sits on the southern end of the Balkan peninsula and borders Albania, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Turkey and the Aegean and Ionian seas. Africa, Asia and Europe meet near those borders where democracy, western philosophy and the Olympic Games have their birthplace. Nearly 2,000 islands surround the mountainous mainland, and the country has become a popular tourist destination. Greece enjoys a high standard of living and is a member of the European Union.

The Project

Historically, missionaries on this project have reached Greek Orthodox people and planted new churches through a combination of friendship evangelism and book translation, making possible literature evangelism and internet evangelism. The project currently has one missionary family on location, with another family in the fundraising stage. Will you join them?
