Saul of Tarsus would not have been my pick for a missionary candidate. His brutal opposition to Christians and to Jesus Himself would seem to rule him out as a choice for service. Who would expect that he would become Paul, perhaps the greatest Christian missionary of all time? God knew. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.” (Isa. 55:8).
Our family has been learning to prayerfully ask, as did Paul, “Lord, what wilt Thou have me to do?” (Acts 9:6). We asked God to make His calling exceedingly clear because we didn’t feel qualified for what we strongly sensed He was asking us to do. Doubts assailed us. “Do you mean us, Lord? How can you possibly use us?”
A friend reminded me that “God doesn’t call the qualified, He qualifies the called.” God has answered our prayer and made our calling clear.
We all know that it is God’s will to spread the gospel to the unreached, but if you want to know specifically what God is calling you to do about it, why not ask Him, “Lord, what wilt Thou have me to do?” Maybe He wants you to go. Maybe He wants you to send others with your financial support, or to pray, or maybe all three! One thing is certain: God is calling you to accept His great commission. Ask Him what part of the team He has picked you to be, then do it.
