“Let’s go!” Khun D called. Chris and I climbed into the back of the open-bed pickup truck along with a Thai missionary lady. Khun D hopped into the cab, and we took off down the two-lane road. Khun D was driving pretty fast.
It had been a good Christmas season. We had come to this province of Samut Songram to help the Global Mission worker’s family do some outreach. We had been teaching English and preparing a Christmas play to share with the community people.
As we sped past a supply store, a tractor with a front-end loader was just pulling out into the road. In an instant, the loader bucket hit the side of our truck, slicing into the cab. The force of the impact sent the truck sliding sideways down the road. Instinctively, the three of us in the back dropped to the floor and held onto each other. As the truck slid, it felt to me that it was going to roll over and throw us out onto the pavement. When the truck finally slid to a stop, still upright, we all breathed a sigh of relief and climbed out to look things over. The truck had come to a stop sideways in the middle of the highway at a place where there was an extra turning lane, so we weren’t in the way of oncoming traffic. A perfect stopping place!
Khun D confirmed my feelings. “I felt like the truck was going to tip,” he said. “Then it was like someone else grabbed the steering wheel and turned it.” That twitch of the wheel was just the right thing to keep the truck from rolling.
I think one of our angels must be a pretty good driver and took the steering wheel from Khun D that day. Praise God for His goodness, and for His angels who are fast and excel in strength!
