Does prayer really make a difference? Rees Howells knew it did. During World War II, this prayer warrior and founder of the Wales Bible College called his students and staff together every morning and evening to pray for the allied forces battling the Nazis. Howells felt impressed to pray for four specific victories—the Battle of Britain, the fight against Rommel’s advances in North Africa and Hitler’s assault on Moscow and Stalingrad. Commenting on their prayer assault during the battle for Stalingrad, Howells later recalled: “But this prayer for Stalingrad seemed the hardest of all to take hold of. For a whole fortnight we wrestled . . . The fighting there from house to house was some of the most desperate in the whole war . . . . [But] contrary to all human reason, as the news got darker, faith rose higher, until we found the enemy was giving way before us. At the same time the tide turned in the visible battle, and, to the wonder of the world, the Nazi army was driven out again utterly broken and demoralized.”

Later, staff and students at the college were interested to see an article in the press by General J. R. C. Fuller, which outlined four strategic blunders Hitler made that doomed the Third Reich: One, failing to invade Britain. Two, failing to attack Egypt and gain Alexandria in North Africa. Three, failing to conquer Moscow. And four, failing to take Stalingrad. These had been the very four things Howells and the college had felt impressed to pray for.
