After spending several months traveling to various places to fundraise, it has been a nice change of pace to attend AFM’s Summer Institute of Frontier Missions. As our life has slowed down a bit and we have had the opportunity to learn many valuable things relating to overseas mission work, I have been struck with one major thought: We need a deeper spiritual experience in order for our mission to succeed.

This is not a new thought or an original one. It is something I have always known. However, as I view my current spiritual condition in light of what I hope to accomplish in Thailand, I realize anew that I cannot afford to take things lightly. I cannot afford to treat my prayer life casually; I must be more earnest. I cannot afford to ignore my sins; I need to be serious about finding victory.

Sometimes in the midst of the busyness of life, we can easily let our time with God take a back seat to things that seem more urgent. I find that when I am really busy serving the Lord it is easy to make excuses about why I don’t spend much time with Him. However, I cannot escape the reality that “without Him, I can do nothing” (John 15:5).

“Without a living faith in Christ as a personal Saviour, it is impossible to make your faith felt in a skeptical world. . . Those who are engaged in service for the Master need an experience much higher, deeper, broader than many have yet thought of having” (Gospel Workers, p. 274).

As we finish our preparations and fundraising for Thailand, pray that we will not be content to leave until we have truly sought and found a deeper spiritual experience.
