In catching up on world news, it is easy to believe that the world has gone completely out of control. But, praise God, He is in control. He knows the end from the beginning (Isaiah 46:10) and has prophesied throughout Scripture about that which now arrests our eyes and ears.1

Besides the faithful foundation of the Scriptures to give us confidence and hope, in each issue of Adventist Frontiers, it is abundantly evident that God is still in control, for His fingerprints and timing are everywhere.

The Holy Spirit may suddenly impress us to pray for someone, only for us to later discover that our timely prayer has helped to save the person’s life (Smith, p. 45). Or God may whisper into our minds, encouraging us to talk to strangers and planting mustard seeds that may grow and move their mountain of unbelief or self-centeredness (Mamoulelis, p. 43). And “God’s divine appointments are always followed by a trail of blessings we could have never imagined,” say the Nyamwanges (p. 42).

At other times, God’s “strategic positioning” puts people where we need them, when we need them (Brizendine, p. 33). Further, He gives us signs that we are where He wants us to be and that we are fulfilling His designs for our lives (Solis, p. 38).

When we are too timid to approach others with our witness, God may send seekers to us (Ivisan, p. 41), and He can remove our fears, emboldening us with His Spirit and so inspiring us with His love for humanity that we are willing to risk our lives to save one or countless others (Tumberg, p. 47).

Twila Paris’ 1993 song “God is in Control” comes to mind, particularly these lines:

This is no time for fear
This is a time for faith and determination . . .
Hold on to all that you hide in your heart . . .
We believe that His children will not be forsaken . . .
We will choose to remember and never be shaken . . .
There is no power above or beside Him, we know . . .

God is in control.
