Freely Give

“Come and eat!” Missionary Abel croaked. He felt too weak to call any louder. A shuffling in the next room told him his teammate Val had heard.

“What’s for supper?” Val asked as he plopped down on the wooden bench.

“Not much,” Abel answered. “We only have five cups of rice and a few sweet potatoes left. They have to last us until we can hike out of the mountains for supplies next week.”

Just then, there was a polite cough outside. “Please, sir,” pleaded an old man standing in the open doorway. “My son has not eaten in days. Can you help?”

Abel turned to Val, who shrugged his shoulders. “God has promised that our bread and water will be sure. Let’s divide what we have with him and trust God to take care of us.”

Putting action to words, Val slowly measured out two of the last five cups of rice. Handing it to the old man, he smiled warmly and wished him God’s blessings. Then the two men lay down to conserve their remaining energy.

The sun was far down on the horizon when Abel was awakened by Val shouting in the kitchen. “Abel! Wake up! Come look at this!”

Stumbling into the kitchen, Abel saw Val standing over the rice bin. “Didn’t we give the old man two cups this morning? There should only be three left. But when I went to cook a little supper, I found that there are now ten whole cups of rice in the bin!”

“God is faithful!” Abel breathed, sinking down on the bench. “When we were faithful to share the little that we had, He multiplied it. Let’s never again fear to give of the little that we have to help others in need.”
