God’s Unknowable Ways

Even though I have all this money, I really don’t like my work.” I listened intently as my language school classmate shared the burden of his heart. He continued, “What a privilege you have to be able to do what you are doing! That must be such a fulfilling life. My only reward is financial. I find Christianity fascinating, and I believe that if you search hard enough, you will find Jesus. Right now, I’m searching for what Christianity means for me. I try to use my wealth to bless others. I have begun several mushroom and fish farms in villages here in Thailand, so local people can provide for their families. I just wish I had my life to live over again, because I would do things totally different.”

This conversation was a powerful reminder to me that God truly is able to work all things together for good (Romans 8:28). You see, several months ago, I was struggling with discouraging circumstances. Soon after we arrived in Thailand, I got sick and had to miss a week of language school. Because I had missed so much, we decided I should pull out of that module and wait for the next one to start. It was a logical decision, but I struggled with the thought of falling behind.

One day, as I was praying about the situation, I had a very distinct impression: What if there is someone in the next class whom God wants you to reach? As I contemplated this possibility, I finally felt at peace with my circumstances, believing God had an overruling purpose beyond my need to learn the Thai language.

Each morning, Kyle and I pray that the Lord will use our language-learning time to bless others. We have been amazed to see the many people He has put in our path.

Please continue to pray that we will shine as lights to those we meet during our time at language school in Bangkok, and that we will be able to speak words that will lead them to their Savior.
