One thing we have learned about the Gogodala people is that their men pride themselves in their physiques and physical strength. Historically, Gogodala men demonstrated dala ela gi (the male way of life) in tribal warfare and headhunting. Today, however, their dala ela gi shows in work and sports, their rugby matches and canoe races. In the towns, though, some have taken office jobs and, as a result, have gained weight and lost some of their physical strength and stamina. Sound familiar? This problem is no stranger to Western culture. The Gogodala refer to this condition as palo betokolaedae (shoulders not doing anything).
Unless we exercise, we become unfit and out of shape. God tests us to exercise our faith. Hebrews 12:11 says, “Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.”
If we don’t lift the barbell of faith, how can we grow? If we don’t press for the prize, if we don’t lean on God’s Word, we are doomed to spiritual palo betokolaedae. Won’t you respond to God’s call and exercise your faith? Be a goer or sender for the unreached today.
