High School Girls and Leadership Development

Periodically, Peace Music Academy holds a series of concerts in local primary and secondary schools to recruit new students. Recently, our daughters were invited to participate in one of those concerts. As you may already know, Peace Music Academy (PMA) is a center of influence started by AFM here in Khon Kaen.

The music teachers and students (including our girls) played and sang to Thai children during a morning assembly. This was a great experience, and the primary school children especially enjoyed it. Attendance was significantly lighter at the secondary school, where attendance was optional.

Christopher Sorensen, another missionary here, asked me and his son, JJ, to sit by the door and pass out fliers advertising the music school. Soon we stepped out of the auditorium and encouraged the children to come in. Eventually, I went back inside for a break, thinking we had done our best and the concert would end soon. However, a few minutes later, some girls came and asked if they could stand outside the door with the fliers and distribute them. With a renewed sense of mission, we joined the girls. Now we had four people passing out fliers.

By volunteering to pass out flyers, the girls displayed the type of leadership we desire to develop. As missionaries, we do not want to come here and do all the work; then, when it is time to return to America, the work dies out. The girls’ initiative was a great reminder that in everything we do, we need to be training our local brothers and sisters to understand the work, take ownership and continue the effort.

Thank you for partnering with us in prayer and support, sharing God’s love here in Thailand. We see fruit before us.
