Hudson’s Struggle

For 51 years, Hudson Taylor, a British Protestant, served as a missionary to China. No other missionary in the 19 centuries since the Apostle Paul has had a wider vision and has carried out a more systematic plan of evangelizing a broad geographical area.
Before Hudson committed his life to service in China, he lived on meager funds as a physician-in-training in England. During this time, a man came to him for help. Hudson went to this man’s home and saw the desperate plight of his family. The children were starving, the wife was near death, the infant was barely alive, and the house was cold and dark. Hudson wanted to help, but he only had one gold coin to take care of his own needs. He wished he had multiple smaller coins so he could give some to them. He describes how he wrestled with the Holy Spirit about this issue. Finally, Hudson gave all he had to the family. Peace flooded his soul as he relied fully upon God to take care of his own needs. The following day, in an anonymous letter, Hudson received four times the amount he had sacrificed.
This story touched my heart as I saw myself wrestling with giving away what I hold dear. Tears came to my eyes as I thought about how the quadruple blessing was already enroute to Hudson during his struggle. What an amazing God we serve!
Thank you for giving sacrificially. We pray that God will bless you abundantly also.
