Returning home from church one beautiful Sabbath day, Nasa heard loud voices and music blaring from the other side of the tall grass behind his house. He decided to walk over to see what the commotion was. He found a large group of young men sitting around, gambling and watching a movie (yes, even in the jungle). The young men are known around the village as troublemakers who spend their time doing all manner of bad things.
Once in the middle of the night, they were making “home brew,” a local alcoholic drink. As a good father and husband, Nasa did not like this going on next to his house, so he shouted at them to go elsewhere. Afterward, he regretted chasing them away.
Today, though, he would do what he felt was right. When there was a break in the movie, he asked the guys to stop what they were doing for a moment because he wanted to say something. Surprised, they all stopped and stared at him. He stood up and said, “I want to tell you that I am sorry for yelling at you the other night. I should not have done that. I’m very sorry!”
Then like Peter talking to the disabled man beside the gate Beautiful, he looked them in the eyes and said, “I don’t have much to give you. I’m poor, just like you. But what I do have I want to give you. Can I please pray for you that God will guide and bless you?”
Shocked, they all agreed that he could pray for them. With a burden for these young men, Nasa lifted them in prayer right there in the middle of their movie and gambling. He prayed a prayer of blessing on them all. Then he quietly left them and went home. Since that prayer, Nasa has told me that they have not returned to the field near his house. They seem to respect that he is a man of God and have decided to take their activities elsewhere.
Only the Holy Spirit could create this humble, winning, Christlike spirit. May God create it in my heart, too!
