Advantages and Disadvantages

As college academic advisors, we always ask our students to delineate the advantages and disadvantages of their considered career path. We felt we should do the same in considering our future work with AFM. Here are some of the things found on our lists.

Advantages: Fresh mangos and lychees and savory curries. Developing new relationships. Giving the joy of the Gospel to seeking people. Being invigorated by the enthusiasm of new Christians. The privilege of living without the burden of things. The fascination of open-market shopping. Discovering the richness of different traditions and customs. Learning appropriate ways to negotiate. Understanding nuances of subcultures. Learning how to overcome prejudice. Praying with people who recognize their need. Experiencing God’s power, provision and perfect timing. Learning patience as we wait on the Lord. The joy of discovery. The joy of being helped by others. The exotic beauty of a tropical environment. No more grading! “This won’t look much like retirement.”

Drawbacks: Being pressed by crowds, squeezed in airplanes and challenged by officialdom. Travel fatigue and jet lag. Sleeping with bugs and noise. Bathroom bewilderment. Heat, humidity, and cold showers. “Why won’t this plug fit this outlet?” “Why did God give me a sense of smell?” Missing grandchildren’s hugs! Missing our students, the dynamic of the college campus and the ease of North American travel. Frustrating communication challenges. Counting time zones before placing a call. Living with the unknown. “This won’t look much like retirement.”

Yes, there are disadvantages, but the greater weight of working together with God far outweighs the temporary losses and inconveniences. We look forward to close dependence on God and evidences of His power and direction as we strive to help reach the unreached for Him. Won’t you join us in allowing Him to work through you?
