Investing for God

When I was a girl living in Brazil, my father taught me about supporting missionaries. He was Sabbath School superintendent for many years. Back in those days, the 13th Sabbath mission offering was a big deal for our church. He always put money aside in preparation for the special mission project featured each quarter in the lesson quarterly.

My father worked hard to put food on the table for us six kids. We grew up in humble surroundings but didn’t lack spiritually. My father always made sure we had family worship together. It didn’t bother us that we didn’t have running water or a toilet in our home. We just used the outhouse in the backyard. When washday came, we would fill a bucket made from a tractor tire and wash our dirty clothes. We would hang the clothes on a barbed-wire line to dry. My mother cooked on a homemade range in a wooden lean-to next to our house.

One year, our family finances were very tight, but my father still wanted to give to the 13th Sabbath offering like always. In our back yard, we had more than 30 fruit trees that produced mangoes, guavas, oranges, avocados, lemons and tangerines. The biggest was a tangerine tree, and my father dedicated its fruit to investment offering. This tree was no longer producing much fruit, but my father prayed that God would bless the tree so he could give a big mission offering. That fall, there were so many tangerines on God’s tree that our family had to place braces under the limbs to keep them from breaking! My father gave a big 13th Sabbath offering!
