Learning As We Go

We love interacting with our missionaries and the people they are reaching for Jesus. The downside is the travel to the projects and the planning and packing for each trip. We typically pack our suitcases much like you would for Western travel, with some exceptions. We pack quick-drying clothing, waterproof bags, water purifiers, mosquito netting, sleeping mats, oral rehydration powder, charcoal powder, etc., and we double check that everything is appropriate for the cultural norms of the country we are visiting.

Diane and I have more than one set of travel bags, and sometimes we start packing weeks in advance. We like to bring hard-to-find items for our missionaries, like nuts or dried fruits, some spiritual food, items from the home office in Michigan and clothing they can distribute to their neighbors.

Beyond careful planning and packing, we have to be aware of luggage weight limitations and visa restrictions. Do we need to get preauthorization, or can we get a visa upon arrival? Will they take American dollars or only local currency?

Each trip we take helps us refine our packing and procedures a little more. Before we launched we spent some time with a couple who were seasoned missionaries and inveterate travelers. They had everything in their suitcases compartmentalized in little mesh bags. We thought that was strange, but now we see their wisdom. A well organized suitcase gives you more room and makes life easier for airport security.

It is good to learn from someone who has gone before us. Jesus was the greatest missionary of all, and He went through times of joy and discouragement, excessive travel, stress, thirst, hunger, uncomfortable quarters and cultural differences. At all times He continued sharing what He could when opportunities arose. We want to follow His example in all we do. Please continue to pray for us. We are praying for you, too.
