Wells are very important. If you live in the States, you most likely have a well you don’t even think about unless something goes wrong with it. Many people in the world today (including me) haul their family water up from open wells. My well ranges from 5 to 19 feet deep depending on the season. Bringing 15 lb. buckets of water up hand over hand can be a pretty good workout. Some wells here in Benin are so deep that the water at the bottom looks like a little prick of light. I am glad I don’t have to haul water up from those wells.
In this country, people congregate at wells and talk as they look down into them. Each well has its own personality. Some are large-diameter and lined with cement while others are hand-dug, with footholds still visible on the walls.
Wells were featured in the Bible, too. Abraham dug many wells. His servant found Rachel at a well, and she showed her character by hauling up many gallons of water for his camels. Jacob found his mother’s family by a well. Jesus had several conversations by wells. He promised that if we drank of Him, springs of living water would bubble up from inside us.
As we serve as wells for the Spirit of God, may people gather around us to drink the living water that bubbles up from within us.
