“Yes, of course,” I replied, eager for the opportunity to meet new people and have some time outside. I was making my annual visit to our project in Turkey and was spending a few days with the Nassar family.
As we arrived at the garage, Ahmed, the owner, greeted us and directed us to seats where we could wait for the work to be completed. He offered us refreshments, and Ali was able to talk with him for a while. Ahmed was curious that I was English and Ali was an American, yet here we were together in Turkey. Thankfully, his questions didn’t probe too deeply. I sensed a friendship forming between Ahmed and me, though I relied heavily on Ali’s ability to translate for me.
Sometimes I wish I had the gift of tongues so I could have meaningful conversations with people as I travel. However, actions speak louder than words. Kind and cheerful hospitality when one is hungry or thirsty can go a long way toward forging and deepening new relationships. A smile in return and kind words can brighten someone’s day and be etched on the memory for years to come. Only God knows where such opportunities may lead in the future! I’m sure there will be people in heaven who trace their introduction to Jesus through smiles and kind words spoken to them in the past.
There are so many cities in Turkey where Christ is not known. The people are so hospitable that starting conversations and making friends is relatively easy. Please join us in praying to the Lord of the harvest for people who will be willing to go and reach others in Turkey.
