“Teacher Jared, why did you come late to my Thai class two days in a row?” Even when May scolds me, she does it with a smile.
May is 22 years old. She is from Chonburi, a city near Bangkok, but now she is living with her grandparents in Ubon Ratchathani. She joined us in September as the registrar for the English language school, and she also teaches a Thai class for our foreign teachers Monday through Thursday.
“Teacher Jared, what did you learn in class yesterday?”
Before each class, May always quizzes us on what she taught us before. She never lets us slack off, and when we make mistakes she is careful to correct us. She is very patient, and she is good with people.
Even though May is younger than I, she sometimes treats me like her little brother. Maybe in Thai culture little sisters can boss their big brothers around, I don’t know. I think it is mostly just her personality.
“Jared, don’t slouch when you walk. Stand up straight. It looks more professional.” I always do what she tells me, and we laugh about it. She really wants to help me any way she can.
May never planned to work at a school. In college, she studied hotel management and tourism. Someday she hopes to work in a resort or maybe manage a hotel. She studied English so she would be able to talk with foreigners who come to visit Thailand. Though her English isn’t perfect, she isn’t shy about striking up conversations with foreigners. All our teachers and staff really like her.
Even though it wasn’t what she planned to do after college, we are very happy that May has come to work with us. I believe God has a plan for May’s life that she doesn’t know about yet. Please pray that through us May will learn about Jesus and discover everything He wants to show her.
