“Where are the reapers, oh who will go?” (SDA English Hymnal p.366). As I look back over the history of missionaries of all denominations, I see a large number of single women and a very small number of single men. Maybe a disproportionate number of stories are written about female missionaries, I don’t know. During my time here in Benin, I have met a large number of single female missionaries and no single male missionaries.
I am often faced with the question of how to minister to the single men in our town when they come asking questions about spiritual things. I can handle the questions, but I don’t feel that I can offer to study the Bible with them one-on-one. I have only poor Linden St. Clair to turn to, but his hands are already full. Where are the single men to befriend these seekers and lead them in the paths of Christianity, men who because they are single have the time to spend, men who have a passion for God and a passion for people? We singles can reach people who might not be reached by someone who is married.
Young single men and women, if you hear God calling you to service overseas, please don’t wait. There are so many waiting to hear the good news that they have a Savior. You may be the very person God is calling to reach those people.
