Mission Seeds

“Take a trip around the world and explore diverse countries and cultures while learning geography and being challenged by true stories of missionaries. Experience different cultures by preparing traditional food, making native crafts and listening to ethnic music.”

This comes from the website of the My Father’s World homeschool curriculum. Two years ago my grandma heard about this curriculum from my cousin who was using it for her girls, and she offered to buy it for my kids. My Father’s World uses a five-year cycle with the first year focusing on “Exploring Countries and Cultures.”

What a blessed school year we had! I truly believe it was providential that we used a curriculum that focuses on missions. It played a huge part in where we are today. It planted mission seeds in our hearts. We hadn’t read many mission stories before, and our eyes were opened. Your life can’t help but be changed as you read the stories of great men and women of faith. Someone once said that we are the sum of our five closest friends. I hope that Jesus is your closest friend, and you can’t go wrong with George Mueller, Hudson Taylor, or William Carey either.

The curriculum includes five mission books that are from a 41-book set titled Christian Heroes Then and Now. After we finished the curriculum we decided to buy the entire set of books. It was one of the best investments we’ve ever made. After reading Gladys Aylward, Amy Charmichael, and Lilian Trasher, our daughter is now telling us she wants to run an orphanage when she grows up.

Whether we realize it or not, we are daily planting seeds in our children’s hearts. What type of “plant” do you want your children to grow to be?
