“Please help me. I haven’t been able to urinate for three days, and I am scared,” Musah said with tears in his voice.

We were visiting a remote village to help a relative of one of our neighbors when this 60-year-old Muslim man climbed the stairs into the little house on stilts, pulled me aside and told me about his problem. “I had surgery a few months ago, and something went wrong,” he said. “The only way I can urinate usually is by pushing on my stomach very hard, and even then only a little comes out. Now I can’t go at all. I went back to the hospital, but they turned me away because I am out of money. I already sold all my cows to pay for my surgery, and I have nothing left. Please help me.”

As I listened to Musah, I knew we had to do something for this desperate man. Jesus’ words came to my mind: “Him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.”

You should have seen the sense of relief that flooded Musah’s face when I told him we would help. We prayed for him in Jesus’ name and drove him three and a half hours to another hospital to see what my urologist friend could do to help him. A CT scan revealed that Musah needed surgery fast. The surgery went well, and Musah has been able to relieve himself again. He continues to go to the hospital for checkups to make sure he is healing well.

Musah is one of the many people we have been privileged to help. One of the ways we have sought to share God’s love is by praying with our patients to God as a friend. Our Muslim friends generally speak to God with memorized prayers, and we sense their interest when we pray from our hearts. There are also times when people ask us if we are Muslim. I usually say we are close to Islam but a little different. I like to share that we believe in the Creator God like they do, and that we even share a similar health message. I also let them know that we believe in the prophets like Moses and Joseph. “The difference is that we follow Jesus,” I typically say. “There is something special about Him. His birth was special, and He loved people and healed the sick like no other.” I am amazed at the positive responses I get from my friends as I speak of Jesus in this way, and I look forward to the day when they will know Him as we do!
