Najaswak

Seated at her kitchen table, Najaswak began telling us of her upcoming summer plans, then paused, squinting as if thinking deeply and said, “Would you like to come with me? It would be so nice. You can sing and play music on board the vessel as it travels throughout Greenland in summer.”

We took time to pray and, in consultation with our field directors, joined Najaswak on her trip.

When we inquired about how to show respect in the Greenlandic culture, she responded, “It is definitely by learning our language.”

We are blessed to have Najaswak as our Greenlandic language helper. Since our arrival in Greenland, it has become evident to us that Najaswak is our person of peace. She also truly appreciates music and has recently gifted us a CD with a collection of Christian songs sung by one of her relatives.

After we sang in one of the villages, a woman approached me, removed her earrings and gave them to me as a sign of appreciation for our presence in the community. She was also delighted to touch our skin and, together, we smiled at all the beauty of God’s creation.

Giving gifts is important in the Greenland culture, and we cannot help but think of the God who gave the best gift to us in Jesus Christ, that together we may become family. We feel so at home here in Greenland. Please keep us in your prayers as we learn the Greenlandic language and interact with the wonderful people.

Author’s Note: Our sailing adventure took us from the West Coast of Greenland to the northernmost town near Thule Airbase, covering several of the 17 major municipalities in Greenland before heading back south, where we disembarked. While on board for 40 days, Najaswak taught us Greenlandic and gave us insights into the culture. We eventually visited 25 settlements, inviting people on board and sharing the Word of God as we played music and sang songs in praise to the Lord. Several individuals asked us to pray with them, which we did, with Najaswak translating, and gladly lifted their concerns to the Lord on their behalf. We will share more of our adventure in our next article.
