“And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, ‘Oh that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, and that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!’ And God granted him that which he requested” (1 Chron. 4:10).
If you are a young person and want to expand your horizons and truly experience the prayer of Jabez, then we encourage you to give of yourself, rely upon God and watch how He uses you to touch the lives of others for eternity. All you have to do is become a short-term missionary (STM) or student missionary (SM) with AFM! Not only will you touch others, but you will be changed forever as well. It is a win–win situation!
We got to witness this on the AFM Pnong Project while working there for about eight weeks. Not only do the school kids love the STM/SMs as teachers, but also as trusted Christians to look up to, valued friends to turn to when hardship comes, and even jungle gyms to play on. And these volunteers are a blessing to everyone else with whom they come into contact, too.
They come full of energy, which brings an instant lift to the mission. Their zeal to serve the Lord overflows. Also, they can do ministry that the career missionaries (CMs) just don’t have time to do. Living on a project for 10 months or a year, they have an opportunity to build deep, long-term relationships and live each day to its fullest. They also experience physical, emotional and spiritual growth. We have watched patience, tolerance and service become part of the characters of these young adults as they do the work to which God has called them.
When the Greenfields had to return to the States so Daniel could receive cancer treatments, the STMs/SMs on the Pnong Project held things together and kept the ministry moving forward. They are a blessing indeed, and their own lives are forever changed by their service.
