Octopus-armed Scripture Consumption

“Can I call you?” My friend Nang messaged me. After catching up, she started to share about a young man, Daniel, a bright-eyed architect who had recently begun attending the church in South Sinim. He was hungry to study the prophecies related to the end times, particularly Revelation. We scheduled a Zoom call, and he immediately began firing questions.

“Is it true that there will be a false Jesus in the end times?” “Is the Catholic church the anti-Christ?” “What do you know about the seven years before Jesus comes again?”

I tried to reign him in and explain that I could directly answer his questions, but it is better practice to have him study the Bible and find the answers rather than have me give them to him. The more we talked, the more I could see that he was so hungry for knowledge that he was indiscriminately latching onto anything on the internet that mentioned Revelation and doing so without a fundamental understanding.

Daniel is just one among the many young people the Spirit has been bringing to seek out the knowledge of God. In 2015, he had a dream in which Jesus appeared as a bright figure. Daniel was not a Christian, but ever since the dream, he had begun to believe in God. He shared that over the years, he would often stand outside the Catholic cathedrals, listening to the music. He had never stepped inside. Like most Sinim people, Daniel did not know the difference between the Christian denominations. The Sinim tend to assume they are all Catholic. Years went by with him always being outside but never stepping in.

However, at the beginning of 2023, he saw a post from a friend of a friend on Facebook sharing that she was a Christian. That individual happened to be Lanh, one of the young women with whom Nang and I had been studying the Bible. He messaged Lanh and shared with her that he also believed in God. Lanh then invited him to join her at church on the upcoming Sabbath, as their church in the city of East Pearl would have a New Year’s party for the youth. He attended and, from that day, faithfully continued to attend every Bible study and Sabbath.

His excitement to understand prophecy is energizing, but his way of obtaining information is like several octopus arms launching into the worldwide web of information and grasping whatever sticks. Nang and I encouraged him to study the book of Daniel first so that he could understand Revelation. He heartily agreed and even invited a friend to join the studies. Please pray for Daniel that he may grow in his study of prophecy and understand the Advent truth of the end times as he learns how to find every answer in the Bible.
