Every day when I walk to school, I see a big box with something inside it—an image made of rock, usually with a red bib and a white face. Have you ever seen something like this? It is an altar with a rock figure called Ojizō-san, a Japanese spiritual guardian.
The Japanese believe this spiritual guardian will protect their children and help them on their journeys in life. The Japanese honor this spiritual guardian and pray to it for their children. In all of Kyoto, there are approximately seven thousand of these spiritual guardians.
This is interesting for me as a missionary because the God of the Bible is the one true spiritual Guardian. We need to tell our neighbors that the only true spiritual guardian is not Ojizō-san but God’s Son, Christ Jesus.
In the beginning, God created everything, including us—God’s people. So that means He can control what happens to us. Jesus wants to be the Spiritual Guardian of us all, including the Japanese. That is why we are missionaries in Japan. To tell them about God. Please pray that people here will turn to Jesus as their Guardian and Savior. Thank you.
