On Furlough

You know you’re an AFM missionary on furlough when . . .

• You get off the plane in nice 65° weather, and you freeze.
• You signal a turn with your windshield wipers.
• When shopping, you have to mentally convert dollars into another currency to see if it’s a good price.
• You meet people for the first time who know you very well.
• You mix foreign words into your speech without realizing it.
• While driving down a country road, you ask your passenger, “Am I driving on the correct side of the road?” And the response is, “No!”
• You call dollars baht or some other foreign currency.
• You’re startled when someone says it’s 50° outside. Then you remember that’s 50° Fahrenheit.
• You enjoy the feeling of being able to walk down the street without people staring at you.
• You shop at Asian markets because they carry the food and brands you are used to.
• Tap water makes you sick.
• You go to a Thai restaurant and are disappointed when your server does not speak Thai.
• You go to a Thai restaurant and correct your server on the pronunciation of a menu item.
• You feel so thankful for the hospitality you’ve been shown, and so amazed at how God provides the support you need to be able to continue working overseas.
• You enjoy being home but look forward to going back home.
