Our Call to the Coolest Place on Earth

“I dreamt that you were preaching the gospel in Greenland,” the man said as we were just settling in Copenhagen, Denmark. He came to church every Sabbath and stayed at the door to talk with my husband, Joe, as he welcomed visitors and members. He talked a lot about Greenland. One Sabbath morning in 2019, he told us of that dream.

In 2020, we engaged in focused prayer for laborers to be sent into the harvest field. Not long after, we both felt a tug on our hearts to consider serving as full-time missionaries to the unreached. Greenland, we believed, was too cold for tropical birds like us. It was nowhere in our imagination, but God always has the most remarkable plans.

In 2021, when we filled out the application for service as career missionaries with AFM, we were pleasantly surprised to know there was a call for missionaries to serve in Greenland. Had God been orchestrating these plans for us?

When AFM invited us to an orientation week last March, the Lord brought two very specific events to memory—first, the dream from our Greenlandic friend. However, all attempts to retrace this man has yet to bear fruit. The last time we saw him, he had helped us fix a laptop when he suddenly saw the screensaver pictures and said, “Do you know that that is Greenland?” We had no idea. To us, it was just a pretty screen on Joe’s new office laptop.

Secondly, after the call was presented, we contacted Elsebeth and Tony Butenko, a couple that visits Greenland every summer for missional purposes. Elsebeth told us of a prayer meeting scheduled by her team for the following day—the very day we were expected to give our response—to pray for missionaries to be sent to Greenland. Had their prayer just been answered?

The day we accepted the call, funds came into AFM for a new project. We soon heard these words during the training, “What project could be newer than yours launched just a few hours ago?” Thus, God confirmed our call. Amazing!
