Save Another, Save Yourself

There is a true story of two men crossing the Himalayas. The passes are extremely precarious, and if a storm comes, and they often do, anyone caught away from shelter will likely freeze to death.
Late one day as the two men were hiking toward a town, a storm came upon them suddenly. They started to wonder if they would be able to make it to safety. Plodding forward as fast as they could, they came upon a man who had fallen and was injured. The two men had a decision to make: would they risk their own lives by stopping to help? One of the men felt he could not in good conscience leave the injured man. His companion, however, decided he couldn’t risk any delay, so he continued on alone.
The kind man lifted the injured man onto his back and trudged on into the blizzard. Sometime later, they came upon the body of the man who refused to help—frozen stiff. Realizing that the body heat from the injured man on his back had kept him alive, the kind man kept pushing forward, and before long they reached the city. In saving the injured man, the kind man had saved himself.
