Still Life

“He’s alive? Oh that’s wonderful! I am so happy!” I exclaimed as I talked to Kay on the phone.

Kay’s fourth baby boy was still alive! Praise God! This was very exciting news to me. He was four months old now.

I had visited with Kay before we left on furlough. She was so happy to have another little baby. As I sat in the smoke-filled longhouse, I remembered two years before when Braden and I had spent the night there. We had received a call from the family telling us that their baby boy was sick, and they needed help getting to the hospital. Braden and I drove on the slippery mud roads to the village, only to get stuck on the last hill. As we walked through the village, someone told us we were too late. We spent the night with the mourning family. This had been their third baby boy in a row to die before reaching two months of age. It was a heart-wrenching time for the family, and I had been praying that things would be different for this fourth baby boy.

When we left for furlough, the baby was nearly a month old. We were sad that we couldn’t be there to help if needed. All throughout our furlough, we prayed that God would be with this family in a special way and extend this little one’s life. God heard and answered our prayers.

Please continue to pray with us for this family and their baby boy. Maybe God is preserving his life for some special work.
