Talking with My Best Friend

“What is prayer?” I never thought I would be asked that question in a piano lesson.

I have been a student missionary in Thailand for six months now. I came here to teach music, and I have loved it so much. My piano students bring me so much joy. Every day here is different, but sometimes I ask myself, Am I making a difference to the people around me? When we start getting comfortable in our usual routines, it is easy to forget our purpose.

What is prayer? As I looked at my student with her eyes eagerly waiting for a reply, I hesitated for a moment. I did not know how to answer her daring, honest and simple question. How do I respond in an equally honest and simple way to an eight-year-old who does not know anything about Jesus?

After quickly gathering my thoughts, I told her that prayer is like talking to your best friend. Without hesitating, she asked, “Then who is your best friend?” I began to tell her that Jesus is my Best Friend, and I get to talk with Him every day. She quickly responded, “I want a best friend just like that!”

As I reflected on the conversation with my student, I could not help but remember my purpose. Yes, I teach music here, but that is not where it should end. As I continue teaching my curious piano students, I want to follow Jesus’ example and methods of showing love and forming personal relationships.

Please pray for our students at Peace Music Academy. May they, too, be able to talk with Jesus as their Best Friend every day.
