Teaching to Learn

One-room schools reveal a fascinating principle of learning. When there aren’t enough teachers or children to divide into separate classrooms, teachers have to be creative. Wise teachers encourage older students to tutor younger ones during part of the class time so the teacher can focus on teaching others. This results in unexpected benefits and accelerated growth in student learning and maturity.

We think we have learned something when we can demonstrate proficiency through a test, but how quickly do we forget things after exams? The real demonstration of learning is to teach it to someone else. The very act of preparing and teaching a topic imparts a deep and lasting knowledge of the subject.

Going back to the basics of the Bible in order to teach them to others has helped me see the big picture much more clearly. It has opened my eyes to things I had overlooked before. I now am blessed to teach others to teach.

If you want deeper knowledge, prepare to teach it to someone else. Pray that the Holy Spirit will guide your efforts as you teach to learn.
