The Fire of Evangelism

“Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age’” (Matt 28:18-20).

“When the eyes of the members of our large churches are anointed with the heavenly eye-salve, they will arise, and go forth to fulfill this commission . . . . When their hearts are imbued with the Holy Spirit, they will worship the Lord their God, and him only will they serve” (Review and Herald, Feb. 9, 1905).

Our eight newly baptized members are now on fire for the Lord. Just a few days after their baptism, they organized themselves into three groups and established three ministry areas covering Fria. This has been my dream—to have people I can train for the work. Among the eight, four are totally engaged in spreading the Good News that has changed their lives. Their leader, Maurice Bonnet, has a heart for evangelism. He believes God has called him to be a pastor. One day he told me, “Uncle Fred, when I talk to people about Christ, I feel a special kind of joy. I feel like I have accomplished something.”

The leader of the Adventist Youth Service here in Guinea was on his way to Fria for the baptism of these eight souls when he got into an accident. After the accident, he was not able to accomplish his mission of introducing AY to our group. So the pastor’s daughter decided to do what she could. She read the AY history to the group and taught them the AY theme songs, rules and motto. This was like adding gasoline to the evangelistic fire that was already burning in these young people. Since then, every Sabbath they have an AY meeting and then go out to evangelize. We have formed a support team to go out with them every other Sabbath to follow up with their contacts and get to know them. We are putting together some materials to train them how to give Bible studies. We want to keep that Gospel flame burning!

On the 27th of September 2012, we received word from our local mission that an AY instructor from the Sahel Union would be coming to Guinea to conduct a training seminar. We were not able to send all of the young people, but we sent Maurice Bonnet, who is devoted to this cause. We are also in contact with the AY leader at the mission to put something in place to complete our group’s AY training.

“One soul, won to the truth, will be instrumental in winning others, and there will be an ever-increasing result of blessing and salvation” (Review and Herald, Mar. 13, 1888).
