The Gift That Keeps on Giving

A few weeks ago as I was sitting in a doctor’s exam room with our two-year old in my lap, I had a revelation. The atmosphere was not exactly peaceful. He was screaming at the top of his lungs, crying big tears, disappointed that his mom and dad were holding him down instead of taking his side. While the nurse squeezed a few drops of blood out of his little finger for a routine test, I tried to calm myself and him, hoping it would be over soon. Then, in the middle of all that drama, I heard Cristian telling the nurse, “Next time, I’m going to give you some of my blood instead.” After a few seconds that seemed more like minutes, everybody in the room burst out laughing, once they understood that he was joking. He was simply voicing the feelings of every loving father struggling to comfort his crying baby.

A few minutes later, as I was hugging our little boy who was now all calmed down, a thought started nesting in my mind. Wouldn’t that be nice to be able to give your blood instead of your child’s? To take all the immunization shots for them? To be able to take their pain on yourself when they are sick or hurt? It would be wonderful indeed, though sadly, it’s impossible.

Then I realized that this actually has been done for all of mankind. Jesus gave His blood so we wouldn’t have to give ours. He took all the pain created by sin so we wouldn’t have to bear it. He is still fighting our battles. He did that for everyone, and yet many, many people in this world still don’t know anything about Him.

We have brothers and sisters in this world. Together, let’s bring light into their lives and let them know that we share the same loving Father. Unlike us earthly parents, He is able to take all our burdens on His shoulders.
