“Only my husband and I will harvest,” she said with a tinge of tiredness, pointing to her rice fields. As I looked out over the fields, they did not seem very large to my American eyes—but my one-time experience harvesting told me it would take them a long time to finish the task, especially with just the two of them.
Looking back now, I cannot help but ponder if it is not the same way with the gospel. A worker or two ventures out into the harvest and quickly realizes they are but a drop in the bucket compared to the amount of work to be done! What are one or two—even a thousand—compared with the numerous cities and towns, and the unreached in numberless villages, scattered across the globe?
When I consider the province where I am working now, there are so many villages, so many people! Some know about Jesus and love Him—but they are so few. Others have heard of Him but do not really know who He is or what He has done for them. Many have not heard at all. Sure, there are plenty of Khmer Adventists, but . . . where are the Pnong?
“It is all spoiled,” she commented.
“Spoiled?” I queried.
“Yes,” she replied, her eyes bore a mist of some undefinable emotion, similar to worry.
“All of it?” I asked, seeing there were two fields.
“Yes.”
Could it be that while some are waiting to join the harvest in the field, the harvest is already ripe and may soon spoil?
“Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? Behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest” (John 4:35).
