The Trapped Butterfly

Over the summer, while many people traveled to the sea for a long vacation, Teddy and I took a break from language courses, but still tried to practice every day.

Each evening, we headed to the park so Anastasia could meet with friends, which meant we usually found a parent with whom we could try to converse in Croatian. And twice a week, I would meet with my baka od Boga, my grandmother from God, who does not speak English.

After not seeing each other for a couple of weeks, the first time my Baka and I got together, her heart was so heavy. We were together for five and a half hours! She spoke much of the time, and she cried a lot. I could not catch everything she was saying, but I know there is hurt in her family. She has had her heart closed to God for many years. It was open for a brief moment as our relationship began, but she says it is closed again.

As she poured her heart out to me, I was only able to pick up bits and pieces. The next time we met, she asked deep questions, such as “Do you cry?” and “What do you think happens to our souls when we die?” as well as questions about my faith.

I have prayed and waited for this friendship for a long time. I know God has placed her in my life for a reason. Sometimes I feel frustrated and helpless. I cannot find the words I want to say, nor form them. It is like being a big, amazing butterfly trapped in the chrysalis. In these moments, I know I have to look to Jesus and remember that He has a plan. He is using us exactly as He wants to, even now.

Our family has made great progress with this language, but it is very complicated. Please pray for us as we struggle to learn even more. Please also pray that my baka will find peace and comfort, trust God with her life, and know Him for who He really is. Please pray that God will lead me in my friendship with her.

Thank you all for your prayers and support.
