Wars and rumours of wars: it is no longer only a warning, but reality. We see images of families running for their lives from gunfire. In their refugee camps, we hear heartbreaking stories of lives destroyed. We also see more children at the traffic lights, washing car windows with small brushes and bottles of soapy water for any donation. During one five-minute traffic light stop, a young girl approached us. As she reached my side of the car, I opened the window, greeted her and handed her a bottle of drinking water and some money. She walked away and returned a few seconds later. She knocked on my window and signalled for me to open it. As I did, she stood on her tiptoes and kissed my cheek. My heart melted as our eyes met, and then the traffic light turned green, and we pulled away.
I did not deserve that kiss, but I received it nonetheless. We search for God in many ways. We ask questions, we have spiritual discussions, and God shows Himself to us. We see Him in the rainbow that shines over the herd of sheep on the mountain. Sometimes we see Him when He saves people’s lives as they run through mine fields. Sometimes when you ask God to show Himself, He kisses you on the cheek at a traffic light.
“I will give thanks to You, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all Your wonderful deeds. I will be glad and rejoice in You; I will sing the praises of Your name, O Most High” (Ps. 9:1, 2).
