“I am the true Vine.” Jesus spoke these words in John 15 as He revealed the key to a Spirit-filled life. The vine is the life-giving source of a plant. It brings nutrients and water to its branches, and enables the plant to bear fruit.
There are many false vines in our world that promise fuller life but bring only emptiness and death. Whether the vine be a career, music, money, pleasure, drugs, or anything else that promises fulfillment, none can compare to Jesus, the true Vine.
I remember a time in my life when I was looking for fulfillment and purpose in my own abilities and talents. All my dreams of worldly honor came crashing down as I pondered where my goals were really leading me. As I evaluated my love of drugs and my dreams that my rock band would become popular, I saw in myself someone wholly given to self-pleasure and pride. I realized that I really didn’t love anybody but myself. As my false peace slipped away, I prayed that God would change my heart and help me desire things that were good for me. When I connected to the true Vine, He gave me victory over my addictions and a new life direction.
The Great River People of Cambodia are seeking acceptance from God through their own works and rituals. At the end of each day, they hope their good deeds outweigh their bad, but they can never be sure. Islam is as dry as any other vine that promises life apart from Christ. Let us work together to join our brothers and sisters in Cambodia to Jesus!
